Honoring our Fathers on Father’s Day

Father’s Day is the day we honor the parental role models in our lives.  It was created by Sonora Smart Dodd in 1910.  Her father was a veteran of the Civil War, and had successfully raised 5 children on his own.  Being that she hadn’t had a mother to celebrate on Mother’s Day, Sonora decided that a tribute to Dad’s was necessary.  So Father’s Day was officially born on June 19, 1910 in Spokane, Washington.

Father’s day isn’t doesn’t only have to be about honoring your biological father!  You can honor your husband, brother, or close relative.  You could also honor a male that has been a father figure in your life- such as a pastor, leader, or mentor.

Although Father’s Day isn’t as popular in the gift world as Mothers Day, gift giving on Father’s Day has also become a tradition.  I’m sure any Dad would be happy with just the thought of being honored on Father’s Day, but if you really want to make an impression, and show the important man in your life that you really do honor him, you may want to really think about his likes and hobbies.  Then, select a gift that can help him expand those likes and hobbies even further!

For example, my Dad is an avid golfer, and will always except ANY golf gift.  My husband on the other hand, is a sports fanatic, so a jersey from his favorite team will always score brownie points for me.

What ever gift you choose, make sure the gift is accompanied by a heartfelt greeting card that explains how much you honor them.  Everyone needs to feel loved, appreciated, and respected- even Dad!
